OKRA FARMING

 


Okra, also known as lady's finger or gumbo, is a flowering plant valued for its edible green seed pods. The scientific name of okra is Abelmoschus esculentus. It belongs to the mallow family (Malvaceae) and is native to regions of Africa and Asia.



OPTIMAL SOIL FOR OKRA:

 Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus) thrives in well-drained and fertile soil. It prefers a soil pH between 6.0 and 6.8. Sandy loam or loamy soil with good organic content is ideal for okra cultivation. Adequate sunlight and warm temperatures also contribute to its growth. Well-prepared soil that retains moisture without waterlogging is crucial for the successful cultivation of okra.

- Clemson Spineless: This is a popular and widely grown variety known for its productivity   and   tender pods.

- Emerald: Another common variety with dark green pods.

  - Okra pods are typically ready for harvest about 50 to 60 days after planting.

  - Harvest the pods when they are 2 to 4 inches long, as smaller pods are more tender.

 HOW TO HARVEST:

   - Okra pods should be harvested with a sharp knife or pruning shears.

   - Harvest the pods when they are young and tender, usually every 2-3 days during the peak         growing season.

   - Be careful not to damage the plant or the adjacent pods while harvesting.

   - Harvesting regularly encourages the plant to produce more pods.

   - Best harvest in the morning as pods are cool to maintain crispness
